About the nutrient numbers
Last updated: August 27, 2026
MineralPlate is an estimating tool. It's useful for spotting patterns in what you cook — not for clinical decisions.
Where the numbers come from
- An AI vision model reads your recipe photo or PDF and extracts the ingredients, quantities and servings.
- Each ingredient is matched to an entry in public food composition databases (USDA FoodData Central and the Canadian Nutrient File).
- Matched amounts are summed into whole-recipe totals, then divided by the servings you set to give per-serving figures.
- Percentages are shown against Health Canada daily value references, adjusted for the age, sex and life stage in your profile.
Why they're estimates
- Handwriting, photos at an angle and unusual formatting can be misread.
- An ingredient may be matched to a close but not identical database entry — each match shows a confidence level so you can check it.
- Cooking changes nutrients. Losses from heat, water and draining aren't modelled.
- Brands, growing conditions and cuts of meat vary; database values are averages.
- Some nutrients are simply missing from a database entry, and are shown as unavailable rather than zero.
Always review the parsed ingredients on the review step before saving — that's the single biggest factor in how accurate a recipe's profile ends up being.
Not medical or dietary advice
MineralPlate doesn't diagnose, treat or prevent anything, and it isn't a substitute for a physician, registered dietitian or pharmacist. Don't use it to manage a medical condition, plan clinical nutrition, decide on supplements, or make decisions during pregnancy, breastfeeding or for an infant without professional guidance.
Nutrient targets are also not the same as safe upper limits, and high percentages shown for a single recipe do not on their own indicate excess.
If a number looks wrong
Edit the recipe: correcting an ingredient match, quantity or serving count immediately updates the whole profile. If a figure still looks implausible, trust the food label or a professional over the estimate.
